Upcycled & Recycled Gift Ideas

I am always on the search for items that are recycled, upcycled, repurposed or eco-friendly. I am amazed at what creative minds can do with everyday objects and how they transform them into something totally different, useful and appealing. Here are a few artists' works that I found recently and that I think you will like. Look at the transformation.
Handmade bottle opener made from a broken skateboard deck. Carefully cut, sanded with a water-based poly finish. Screw post opens bottle caps without denting.

This belt is made with a tubular road bike tire from the 60's.
The bicycle tires used for these belts are rescued from Berlin, Germany bike shops where they were ready for the dump.

This isn't chalkboard paint, folks. A real melamine black chalkboard, distressed and then attached to a vintage "National" brand washboard.

Donkey Necklace - Upcycled Cork

Cork is the bark of the cork oak tree. The cork is grown in managed forests in Portugal and Spain where the bark is carefully harvested, once every nine years, in a centuries-old tradition with hand tools and without fertilizers or pesticides; a process that ensures the forests will remain undamaged!

Have fun with these "light as a feather" earrings I made from recycled aluminum! Production is time and labor intensive but the result is so striking and fun!
Recycled metal is hand washed, cut, textured and assembled individually into each unique pair of earrings. Upcycled aluminum is double layered and annealed to make them quite sturdy.

Arts Goggle in Fort Worth Texas

When checking my email on Friday 5/18, there was an message about something called Arts Goggle. It sounded strange, so I had to check out the link to the website and see what it was all about. And much to my surprise it looked like something I wanted to attend. So on Saturday evening, I headed to Magnolia street, on the South side of Fort Worth and checked it out. It only happens twice a year and only for a few hours in the evening, unlike most events that go on for a few days.

Many artists and craftsmen were selling their wares up and down the streets. This just happens to be one booth that caught my eye and I had to stop and take a picture.

It seemed like art was everywhere, even on the transportation.

Canvases and cars weren't the only things being painted that evening.

And hands weren't the only thing painting. This troop painted while they danced.

Arts Goggle doesn't have just eye candy, it has ear candy as well. Plenty of musicians were spread throughout the streets playing their beats in the hot Texas sun.

To find out more about Arts Goggle in Fort Worth, Texas, visit the website:
It comes only twice a year, for one day only. Next event is October 13, 2012 from 4 to 10 pm.
Come on by.
